Fyne Fiddles 2016

A creative approach to playing tunes on the fiddle with Amy Geddes and Donald Knox - new for this year Amy’s Auntie Sareth is Chef!

Friday 19th (6pm) - Sunday 21st August (2pm) 2016

Loch Fyne from Ardkinglas House

This music weekend is hosted by renowned & highly respected teacher Amy Geddes and will take place in the beautiful Ardkinglas House set in stunning woodland gardens at the head of Loch Fyne in Argyll. Joining Amy is Borders guitar player Donald Knox. Amy & Donald have been working together at Riddell Fiddles in Selkirk for several years and make a fantastic teaching team. You are guaranteed to learn and laugh aplenty.

What will we do?

For 2016 - our fourth year - we are looking at creative music practise and how to begin finding your own unique musical voice. There will be new tunes to learn, but we’re going to show you how to put your individual stamp on it - we’ll dig deep into how to make a tune truly your own.

To achieve this we will be doing some focussed listening, exploring rhythmical and melodic variations & some basic improvising techniques to help us get playful with our music.

There will be some suggested bowing and ornamentation, but these will & should vary so please come with an open mind, ready to break free from set patterns of up & down bows!

Teaching methodology & ethos

Amy believes strongly that everyone should feel comfortable and be happy throughout so that they leave the workshop feeling inspired, excited, fulfilled, full of new thoughts, tunes and ideas (and possibly just a little bit tired). At all of her workshops time is made to get to know one another well enough to work comfortably in the group setting – feeling uncomfortable is one of the biggest barriers to successful learning so it is of huge importance to be relaxed together. We will take care of our bodies with effective warm ups and stretches. The tunes are taught by ear but music is available to take away or for anyone who is not confident at aural learning.

Sheet music will be provided of all tunes and exercises taught with bowing & ornamentation marked where relevant. Please bring your own sound / video recording device if you have one as you are welcome to record as little or as much of the workshop as you wish. For any of you who do not own such a machine, we can record the tunes & key concepts at the workshop and share them by e-mail afterwards.

Who Can come?

This workshop is open to fiddle players but may be of interest to other strings players. We may also be able to accommodate guitar and other accompanying instruments depending on numbers. Please contact us if you are unsure about attending on your instrument. The course is open to players of differing abilities, but not absolute beginners. And whilst this course is aimed at adults, we are happy to include teenagers if they would be comfortable working in our adult space

  • Weekend courses start on the Friday evening with a light supper at 7.30pm and then a session led by Amy & Donald until about 10.00pm.

  • Classes take place all day Saturday (9.30 – 12.30 & 2.00 – 5.00) & on Sunday morning (9.30 – 12.30). Breaks are taken as required.

  • Saturday evening is an opportunity to eat, drink & ceilidh. Everyone who wants to can take a turn, play a tune, sing a song or tell a story…. Or just play your fiddles together.

  • There will be an opportunity to enjoy walking in the beautiful woodland gardens – timing to be decided according to the weather forecast. We will leave after lunch by 2.00pm on the Sunday.

Catering is once again provided in house, but the year with a major change. Amy has passed over chefs duties to her Auntie Sareth. This decision is based on years of visits to Auntie Sareth’s house and being served endlessly delicious meals!

There is limited accommodation at Ardkinglas where you can stay as a guest of the house. Alternatively, there is accommodation in the village of Cairndow at the Stagecoach Hotel (easy walking distance) or there are a few local B&Bs.
